Lady Canary she
The canary in a coalmine
Wingspan gold splendid
Soft feathers divine
Around coalmine men she lived
But only in a cage
A cage where she only
Remained idle for days
Everyday she
Would look at the sunlight
And wonder when she
Would fly in free flight
One day
The coalminers went to the mine
Hugged goodbye did they
Their children and wives
Lady Canary assumed her role
Her wings of feathers of light
And ventured deep down
Into the black mine night
Lady Canary indentured
She didn't like the dark
But remained calm
And carried on with her part
On watch
On guard
She started to feel
Shallow breaths
Oxygen from her lungs
Did the carbon monoxide steal
She fluttered her wings
Alerting the men
They didn't pay attention
Until too late
Death set in
Lady Canary she
Laid lifeless in her cage
Her cage
She let own her
Entrapped in rage
If Lady Canary only knew
That her home was not a cage
For the hatch was always unlocked
Free living would be she
In the rest of her days
May we be
Like Lady Canary
The beacons of light
The light beams
The lighthouses
Electric ray streams
Like Lady Canary
But may we not set
Cages and borders around us
Choking isolated death
Like Lady Canary
The beacons of light
Embody we
But instead of ironclad solitude
May we set ourselves free
